I’m Donald Bell for Cool Tools and today we’re taking a look at this universal socket driver designed for a drill or impact driver. I picked this up for around $10 on Amazon. If you want this same one, you can use the Amazon link in the description, which helps support my videos and the Cool Tools blog.
A socket wrench set is a beautiful thing. And I have to admit, I get a small thrill every time I guess the right size of the nut or bolt I’m working with on the first try.
But sometimes, when you need the job done quickly or you have a lot of different sizes of nuts and bolts you’re jumping between, it’s nice to be able to just reach for one tool that can help you speed through it.
Universal socket drivers are a useful option. They’re filled with little steel rods backed by springs, allowing them to form over a wide range of nuts, bolts, hex head screws, and even small hooks.
This design can be used on a socket wrench, but includes an adapter so it can be dropped in a drill or impact driver.
It’s a bit of a wild ride, though. Because the fit is usually a little off center, you’ll get some eccentric wobble when you use this a high speed. But it works.
Another drawback is that you’ve got a limited size and depth. This will cover ¼”-¾” sockets, but anything larger will mean getting out the socket wrench set.
And as with any tool that provides a “good-enough” fit, you do risk stripping the thing you’re working on. It’s a compromise of convenience. But it is convenient.
So that’s a look at a universal socket driver. They’re made under a bunch of different brands and I can’t say there’s a clearly superior version out there. But I’ll link to the $10 one I got here in the description. And remember, you can see thousands of reader recommended tools just like this at Cool-Tools.org.
